
JOS, NIGERIA — Excitement is building across the country as the University of Jos (UNIJOS) prepares to host the 27th edition of the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) Games, scheduled to take place from November 6 to 16, 2025.
With just a month to go, final preparations are in full swing as the institution gets set to welcome 7,457 accredited athletes and officials from universities across Nigeria. According to Chidiebere Ezeani, Media and Communications Officer, Nigerian University Games Association the event promises ten days of spirited competition, cultural exchange, and a showcase of sporting talent among Nigeria’s brightest student-athletes.
Regarded as the premier multi-sport event in Nigerian tertiary education, the NUGA Games will see athletes compete in various disciplines designed to promote national unity, youth development, and the discovery of emerging sports stars.
Preliminary qualifying events have already been held across 15 NUGA zones nationwide, determining the universities eligible to participate in the flagship tournament.
Speaking on the university’s preparedness, Professor Ishaya Tanko, Vice-Chancellor of UNIJOS, expressed confidence in the institution’s ability to deliver a world-class event.
“The University of Jos is fully ready to host the nation,” said Professor Tanko. “This event is not just about competition; it is an opportunity to promote sports excellence, strengthen unity among our young people, and showcase the hospitality and capacity of our institution and the Plateau community.”
This year’s Games mark a historic milestone, as it will be the first time the University of Jos plays host to the prestigious event since its founding. The university’s Local Organizing Committee (LOC) has assured that facilities, logistics, and security arrangements are being finalized in line with international best practices.
According to NUGA officials, preparations also include volunteer recruitment, media accreditation, and extensive event promotion across digital and traditional platforms to ensure smooth operations throughout the Games.
“The NUGA Games continue to serve as a platform for identifying and nurturing sporting talent within Nigerian universities,” said President of the Nigerian University Games Association. “We are confident that UNIJOS 2025 will set a new benchmark in organization, participation, and spirit.”
The host city of Jos is also gearing up to welcome thousands of visitors, presenting unique opportunities for throughout the duration of the Games.
As the countdown continues, all eyes are on UNIJOS to deliver what could become one of the most successful editions of the Nigerian University Games to date.
