Lagos, Nigeria – June 3, 2025 — Veteran Nollywood actor Ganiu Nofiu, popularly known as Alapini, has expressed regret over his decision to campaign for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election, citing economic hardship, insecurity, and lack of recognition for his efforts.
Speaking during an interview on the online show African A-List, the actor said he and several of his colleagues supported Tinubu’s candidacy because of the former Lagos governor’s perceived positive impact on the Yoruba movie industry and general development in Lagos State.
“We had to abandon our work for two months to campaign for Tinubu in 2023,” Alapini said. “We led the campaign genuinely because of Nigerians’ well-being and not for personal gain.”
The actor, however, lamented what he described as neglect and lack of compensation from the current administration nearly two years into its tenure.
“We supported and committed ourselves to the campaign thinking our messiah had come because we loved Tinubu,” he said. “And we were not compensated. Probably they are not yet in the right frame of mind to do so.”
Alapini also questioned the philanthropic priorities of the President’s son, Seyi Tinubu, who has been reported to have supported several health and welfare initiatives in Northern Nigeria. According to the actor, similar gestures have not been extended to the Southwest.
“Seyi is running around the northern part of Nigeria to pay hospital bills. Aren’t there sick people in Yoruba land too? How many hospitals has he visited in Yoruba land?” Alapini asked.
The comments come amid widespread public concern over the rising cost of living, insecurity, and the slow pace of reforms promised by the Tinubu administration under its Renewed Hope Agenda.
