Abuja, Nigeria – The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a security alert warning American citizens against non-essential travel to military and government facilities in Abuja due to heightened global security concerns.
The alert, released on Monday, also confirmed that U.S. Embassy staff and their family members are currently prohibited from visiting any military sites or government institutions in the Nigerian capital unless for official purposes.
“Due to increased security concerns arising from current global developments, US Mission Nigeria informs US citizens that all US Embassy employees and their families are prohibited from non-official travel to a Nigerian military site or other government venue in Abuja at this time,” the statement read.
The Embassy did not specify the exact nature of the global developments prompting the alert but advised U.S. nationals in Nigeria to exercise heightened caution.
In its advisory, the U.S. Mission urged American citizens to remain vigilant in public places, especially those frequented by Westerners, expatriates, and government officials. It also encouraged U.S. nationals to avoid large gatherings, maintain unpredictable routines, and familiarize themselves with emergency exits when entering buildings.
Key actions recommended include:
Avoiding unnecessary travel and large gatherings
Staying alert in public spaces
Reviewing personal security plans
Monitoring official sources for updates
Despite the restrictions, the Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos remain open and operational, continuing to provide consular services.
American citizens seeking further information or needing assistance have been directed to consult the U.S. Embassy’s official website for updates and emergency resources.
