The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said that the impeachment of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, would not constitute a criminal offence if due process is followed.
Speaking during a media chat on Wednesday, Wike argued that if Fubara commits an impeachable offence, he should be removed through legal means.
“Politics is not play. If he has done something to be impeached, let them impeach him. It’s not a criminal offence,” Wike stated.
Rivers Assembly’s Ultimatum to Fubara
Wike’s remarks come as the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, issued a 48-hour ultimatum for Fubara to re-present the 2025 budget.
The ultimatum follows a Supreme Court judgment delivered by Justice Emmanuel Agim, which ordered the 27 lawmakers loyal to Wike to resume legislative functions after a protracted political crisis in the state.
Political Crisis in Rivers State
The dispute between Wike and Fubara has deepened, with the former governor criticizing Fubara’s inner circle and insisting on adherence to the rule of law.
The crisis stems from a power struggle between the two political figures, with Wike seen as Fubara’s political benefactor before their fallout.
As tensions rise, the threat of impeachment looms, further complicating the already volatile political landscape in Rivers State.
