Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor Attahiru Jega, former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as the Presidential Adviser and Coordinator of Presidential Livestock Reforms.
The announcement was made on Friday by Tinubu’s media aide, Bayo Onanuga, via his verified X account.
“Breaking: President Bola Tinubu appoints Professor Attahiru Jega as Presidential Adviser and Coordinator of Presidential Livestock Reforms,” Onanuga wrote.
Jega, who served as INEC chairman from 2010 to 2015, will lead the Federal Government’s efforts to resolve the longstanding farmers-herders crisis through structured livestock development policies.
In July 2024, Tinubu established the Ministry of Livestock Development to provide focused solutions to issues affecting the livestock sector. The creation of the ministry was based on recommendations from the National Livestock Reforms Committee, which sought to end the decades-long violent conflicts between farmers and nomadic cattle herders.
As Coordinator of Presidential Livestock Reforms, Jega is expected to oversee initiatives aimed at:
Mitigating violent conflicts between farmers and herders.
Developing structured livestock management systems to enhance productivity.
Implementing policies that will modernize the livestock sector.
Jega’s appointment signals the Tinubu administration’s commitment to resolving the persistent clashes between farming communities and nomadic herders across the country.
