A massive fire outbreak erupted on Otedola Bridge in Lagos State on Tuesday night, following a tanker explosion that sent residents and motorists scrambling for safety.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the fire was caused by a fallen 30-tonne DAF gas truck, which exploded while attempting to navigate the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The ensuing explosion sent fireballs into the sky, engulfing nearby structures.
The fire quickly spread to:
A Redeemed Christian Church near the bridge
A residential bungalow
A mechanic workshop
Four vehicles parked in the vicinity
Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, rushed to the scene to contain the blaze.
The fire forced an absolute shutdown of movement in and out of Otedola Under Bridge, causing heavy traffic congestion in the area.
While firefighting operations continue, authorities have not reported any casualties so far. LASTMA and the Lagos Fire Service assured the public that updates would be provided as the situation develops.
This incident adds to the series of tanker explosions that have occurred on Otedola Bridge, a notorious accident hotspot. Authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the tanker crash and take steps to prevent future disasters.
Residents and motorists are advised to avoid the area and follow alternative routes while emergency crews work to clear the wreckage.
