The Tony Okocha-led All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara to either resign or face impeachment by the State House of Assembly.
Okocha made this declaration during a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Monday, accusing the governor of mismanaging the state and plunging it into political instability.
APC’s Allegations Against Fubara
Okocha claimed that the Supreme Court’s verdict on the state’s political crisis suggested that Rivers currently lacks a functional government.
“The Supreme Court, in its verdict, indicated that there is no functional government in Rivers State. The governor has committed multiple infractions, which amount to impeachable offenses,” he stated.
He also accused Fubara of losing the authority to summon lawmakers for discussions, referring to the governor’s recent invitation to the Martin Amaewhule-led Assembly for a meeting aimed at resolving the state’s prolonged political crisis.
Political Tensions Escalate
The Rivers political landscape has been marked by deep divisions between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The Amaewhule-led assembly, loyal to Wike, has been at the center of the power struggle, which intensified following the Supreme Court’s ruling reinstating the lawmakers.
Fubara’s response to this ultimatum remains to be seen, but the situation signals an escalation of the political crisis in Rivers State.
