Nigeria to Host Programme on the Negative Effects of Drug Abuse Among Secondary Students

LAGOS, Nigeria – The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) in association with the Commonwealth Games Federation and the Commonwealth Games Nigeria (CGN) is set to host a programme addressing the adverse effects of drug abuse on secondary school students PeakNews Online reports.

Scheduled to take place on Monday, March 10, 2025, at the Olympafrica Centre in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos State, the event aims to uphold the Commonwealth’s core values of unity, equity, and youth empowerment. According to Tony Nezianya, the Public Relations Officer of the NOC, the initiative seeks to raise awareness on key global issues impacting local communities while serving as a platform to combat social vices and promote positive societal change.

Tunde Popoola, Secretary-General of the NOC, stressed that the programme would specifically tackle the pervasive problem of drug abuse, fostering social interaction among students from various schools. “This initiative is not only about education but also about creating an environment where students can interact, share experiences, and learn about the broader activities of CGN,” Popoola stated.

The seminar is open to secondary students aged 14 to 17 from both public and private institutions, with participation extended to at least 15 schools. Additionally, youths from the Amuwo Odofin area who frequent the Olympafrica Centre are expected to take part.

Dr Adebukola Bojuwoye, a renowned medical practitioner, will lead the programme. Dr Bojuwoye is slated to provide insights into the detrimental impacts of drug use on communities, as well as discuss the role of sports as a corrective measure against such societal issues.

Participants will be rewarded with branded T-shirts, certificates of participation, and sports equipment—including a volleyball, basketball, or football for each of the 15 participating schools, and footballs for local youths using the Olympafrica Centre. Refreshments will also be served throughout the day.

The day’s activities will commence at 10:00 am and conclude at 5:00 pm, with the event officially declared by the President of the NOC, Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel.
