The House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to enforce an immediate shutdown of pornographic websites across the country.
During plenary on Tuesday, lawmakers mandated internet service providers (ISPs) to block access to such websites, citing concerns over societal values and moral standards.
Motion Sponsored to ‘Protect Societal Values’
The motion was sponsored by Dalhatu Tafoki, who represents the Faskari/Kankara/Sabuwa Federal Constituency. Tafoki argued that cyber pornography is a growing global problem, and Nigeria must take decisive action to address it.
“Nigeria is a highly religious country, and all major religions forbid nudity and obscenity in any form. Other countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East have already banned pornography, and Nigeria should do the same,” he stated.
He further warned of the negative psychological and social impacts of pornography, including its potential to promote adultery, prostitution, and desensitization towards morality and family values.
Legislative Action and Sanctions
The House adopted the motion and assigned its Committees on Communications and Legislative Compliance to oversee its enforcement, with a report expected within four weeks.
Speaker Tajudeen Abass emphasized that sanctions would be imposed on any internet service provider that fails to comply with the directive.
