The President of Veterans Wrestlers of Nigeria, Morris Atula, has called on the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Malam Shehu Dikko, to support his vision of revitalizing Nigerian wrestling and returning the sport to its former glory.
Atula, a former Nigeria, Commonwealth, and World Wrestling Champion, made the appeal on Thursday during a special visit to Dikko’s office. The veteran wrestler, who recently returned to Nigeria after four decades in Europe, is a leading contender for the presidency of the Nigerian Wrestling Federation (NWF) in the upcoming sports federation elections.
During the meeting, Atula expressed confidence in his ability to transform Nigerian wrestling, citing his international connections and resources as key assets.
“I have both local and international partners ready to invest in the revival of our wrestling. With my exposure, passion, and network, I can nurture and develop the vast talent waiting for an opportunity. I understand the immediate needs of the Federation and can secure sponsorship from abroad, corporate organizations, and sports-loving individuals,” Atula stated.
He also expressed optimism that state governors across the country would recognize and support the initiative.
Atula commended the appointment of Dikko as NSC Chairman and Bukola Olapade as Director General, noting that the leadership change had inspired veteran wrestlers to take on active roles in the sport’s revival.
“This is a combination of financial strength, passion, experience, and technical expertise. I have worked hard to reach the top of the wrestling world and have gained invaluable experience conducting business globally. I appreciate the efforts of the outgoing board, and I urge the NSC leadership to endorse this bold move to fully develop wrestling in Nigeria,” he said.
As Chairman of the Edo Wrestling Association, Atula also pledged to introduce a special healthcare program for wrestlers and to ensure regular training and competitions across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
