MIES, Switzerland – The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has welcomed the Commonwealth Games Federation’s (CGF) decision to increase the number of 3×3 basketball teams for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The quota will expand to 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams, a significant rise from the eight-team format at Birmingham 2022.
The 50% increase reflects the success of 3×3 basketball’s debut at the 2022 Games and aims to provide more opportunities for Commonwealth Games Associations (CGAs) to participate, further promoting the sport globally. At Birmingham 2022, 12 CGAs took part, and organizers anticipate an even broader participation in 2026.
FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis expressed his enthusiasm for the expansion, stating:
“We are delighted that 3×3’s quota has been increased for Glasgow 2026 and grateful to the CGF for their ongoing support of our sport. The decision is a testament to the great debut success of 3×3 at Birmingham 2022 and the growing popularity of 3×3 in Commonwealth nations and around the world. With more teams competing in Glasgow, we are confident we can build on Birmingham’s success to deliver a thrilling competition and leave a powerful global legacy.”
CGF Chief Executive Katie Sadleir also praised the move, emphasizing the excitement 3×3 brought to the previous Games:
“The 3×3 Basketball and 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball competitions were brilliant to watch at Birmingham 2022, so we are pleased they are back! Their success means they are bigger than before, with the 3×3 Basketball competitions extending from eight teams to 12 and the 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball expanding from six teams to eight—offering even more action for fans to enjoy.”
Glasgow 2026 aims to be an immersive festival of sport and culture, promising an accessible and dynamic experience for spectators. Phil Batty, CEO of the Glasgow 2026 Organising Company, highlighted the significance of the event’s integrated sports program:
“The Commonwealth Games are special because of their inclusive sports program. The 3×3 Basketball and 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball competitions were a fantastic success in Birmingham, loved by both players and fans. Expanding the tournament further showcases this great sport, bringing more games and more excitement. With action-packed programs across all four venues in the city, there will be something for everyone. Glasgow 2026 is set to be a world-class sporting celebration filled with passion, fun, and outstanding competition.”
The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place from July 23 to August 2, featuring a 10-sport program with elite athletes from 74 nations and territories competing for glory.
