Lagos, Oct. 31, 2024, 2024 (NAN) The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Alfred Adewale Martins, has called on Nigerian leaders to adopt a culture of sacrifice and prudent lifestyle to conserve public resources.
Speaking to newsmen after the ordination of priests at the Holy Spirit Church in Onireke Ojo, Lagos, Martins emphasised that leaders must lead by example to alleviate citizens’ anxieties about the economy.
Martins described leadership as a devotion to ensure the betterment of the greater majority, stressing that leaders should apply public funds wisely to address the country’s economic uncertainty.
He condemned excessive wealth accumulation by leaders, urging them to prioritise service to the people over personal gain.
“The people should see a reduction in the opulent lifestyles of leaders to believe efforts are being made to improve the state,” Martins said.
He also noted that some public office holders’ personal budgets exceeded the Internally Generated Revenue of some states and local councils, which harmed the economy.
Additionally, Martins tasked judicial officers to be incorruptible and work hard to restore hope in the people.
He expressed concern over recent pronouncements by the bench that questioned the integrity of officials and called for sanctions against erring officials.
Martins offered prayers for the country’s progress and encouraged Nigerians to remain hopeful. (NAN)
