UN Report: Female Athletes Lost Nearly 900 Medals to Transgender Competitors

A recent United Nations report has revealed that female athletes have lost nearly 900 medals to transgender rivals competing in women’s sports categories.

The study, titled “Violence against Women and Girls in Sports,” found that over 600 female athletes were defeated by competitors who were born biologically male across various events.

“By March 30, 2024, more than 600 female athletes in over 400 competitions had lost over 890 medals in 29 different sports,” the report stated. It further highlighted that the shift from strictly female categories to mixed-sex competition has led to a growing number of women missing out on medals and other opportunities.

The report was compiled by UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women and Girls, Reem Alsalem, and was presented to the UN General Assembly earlier this month.

While the document did not specify which events the medals were awarded at or the exact time frame, it emphasized that “policies implemented by international federations and national governing bodies” have permitted athletes born male to compete in women’s categories.
