Former President Donald Trump, during a campaign rally on Saturday, urged for modifications to the 25th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, suggesting that a vice president should be removed from office if they cover up the president’s incapacity.
Trump’s remarks come as he and his Republican allies continue to criticize Vice President Kamala Harris and the Biden administration, accusing them of hiding President Joe Biden’s mental fitness. These accusations intensified after Biden suspended his 2024 re-election bid.
“I will support modifying the 25th Amendment to make it clear that if a vice president lies or engages in a conspiracy to cover up the incapacity of the president, it should be grounds for immediate impeachment and removal from office,” Trump said. He made the comments at a rally in Mosinee, Wisconsin, directly pointing at Harris.
Trump also referenced Biden’s performance in a June debate, saying, “If he didn’t go to that debate, he’d still be running,” highlighting what Trump views as a significant factor in Biden’s decision to halt his campaign.
The proposed changes to the 25th Amendment could become a significant topic as the 2024 election season heats up, with Trump continuing to position himself as a leading candidate.
