In preparation for the Navy Sailing Club’s annual Commodore/Independence Day Boat Race, slated for October 1, 2024, the club has formed a six-man committee to oversee the event’s planning PeakNews Online reports.
A memo, signed by the Club Commodore, Captain Festus Adewuyi, and dated September 10, 2024, confirmed the appointment of Omechili Abriba Joseph as the committee chairman.
Other members include Stephen Krapeh, Engr. Jude Nwankwo, Vivian Osas Uhumuavbi, Captain Kenneth Urien (MN), with Monday Orji serving as the secretary.
The committee is tasked with ensuring adequate boat availability and readiness of the sailors for the prestigious race.
They are expected to submit a readiness report to the club’s executive by September 17, to address any outstanding issues ahead of the October 1 race.
This development follows the Navy Sailing Club’s notable performance at the 2024 Nigerian National GP14 Championship, sponsored by TotalEnergies, which took place on September 7 at the Lagos Yacht Club.
The event saw a strong turnout of sailors and guests, blending competitive sailing with entertainment.
Captain Adewuyi, who led the club’s delegation, emphasized the executive’s commitment to organizing more races and restoring the club’s status as a premier water sports hub in Nigeria.
Eighteen boats that participated in the Lagos Yacht Club event are expected to compete in the Independence Day race. Despite only nine boats finishing the last race, the Navy Sailing Club secured two of the six trophies awarded, reinforcing their reputation within Nigeria’s sailing community.
