The FIBA U18 Women’s AfroBasket tipped off in Pretoria with no surprises as the tournament favorites Egypt took a win over Nigeria PeakNews Online reports.
In a standout performance, Khadiga Abouelghait powered Egypt to a 72-60 victory over Nigeria. Building on her impressive form from the U16 AfroBasket, Abouelghait was the star of the match, contributing 19 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and a block. Her efforts were crucial in helping Egypt overcome a resilient Nigerian side.
The opening quarter ended with a close 21-20 lead for Egypt, signaling that Nigeria, making their first U18 AfroBasket appearance since 2008, would be no easy opponent. However, Egypt, under the guidance of coach Mostafa Atef Hadhood, extended their lead with a dominant 22-12 second quarter, creating an 11-point cushion.
Nigeria fought back in the second half, winning the third quarter 16-15, but Egypt’s early advantage proved insurmountable. A 14-12 final quarter sealed the win for the North Africans.
“It was an important match, not only because it was our first, but also because Nigeria is one of the most significant teams here. They pushed us, but our defense was the key to victory. We had prepared well, having studied them before, and it was a solid team effort,” Abouelghait said post-game.
Malak Elhemaly and Hana Mohamed also contributed significantly to Egypt’s win, scoring 13 and 10 points, respectively. Miriam Elgendy was a defensive standout, leading the team with 8 steals, 7 rebounds, and 6 points, ranking high in efficiency.
For Nigeria, Idubamo Beggi led the charge with a game-high 23 points, alongside 6 steals, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. However, her efforts were not enough to carry the team, as only Momoluwa Ayomide joined her in double figures with 10 points. Abigail Isaac led Nigeria in rebounds with 14, followed closely by Haminatu Ayodeji with 13.
