President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on the Nigerian judiciary to remain steadfast in fulfilling its constitutional duties, regardless of criticism from those dissatisfied with its rulings. Speaking at the launch of the autobiography of outgoing Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Olukayode Ariwoola, titled “Judging with Justice,” Tinubu emphasized the importance of judicial integrity.
Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the President praised Justice Ariwoola for his exemplary career, marked by significant reforms, including increasing the retirement age of judges and securing improved pension benefits for judicial officers. Tinubu also expressed hope that Ariwoola’s successor, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, would continue the legacy of upholding justice.
“I urge the Nigerian judiciary to live up to its constitutional mandate and ignore those who never see anything good in the Judiciary unless the pendulum of justice swings their way,” Tinubu stated. He further expressed optimism that Ariwoola’s successors would maintain and build upon the standards set during his tenure.
The launch event, which took place in Abuja, was attended by prominent figures, including former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, who commended Ariwoola’s leadership in stabilizing the judiciary. Abubakar described the outgoing CJN’s career as a testament to hard work and selfless service to the nation.
“His Lordship’s long and inspiring career on the bench is proof that dedication and commitment to service yield rewards. Justice Ariwoola’s efforts to address the challenges facing the Supreme Court and the judiciary as a whole are commendable,” Abubakar said.
Tinubu also reflected on Ariwoola’s judicial reforms, which included raising the retirement age for judges from 65 to 70 years and securing full pension benefits for retired judicial officers. He applauded the Supreme Court’s judgements, especially those that have had far-reaching effects on societal reforms, such as the recent ruling that granted financial autonomy to local government councils.
“I am glad to witness these achievements in the judiciary, and I urge the third arm of government to continue delivering justice without succumbing to undue criticism,” Tinubu added.
The event highlighted Ariwoola’s lasting impact on Nigeria’s judicial system as he prepared to retire from public service.
