An ice hockey player with the Blue Jackets, Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew, were tragically killed in a cycling accident on Thursday evening.
Blue Jackets announced Friday morning on X, formerly known as Twitter. The brothers were struck by a car while riding their bikes in Oldsman Township, N.J.
Johnny Gaudreau, 31, was a standout player in the NHL, having played 11 seasons with both the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Calgary Flames. Known affectionately as “Johnny Hockey,” Gaudreau was celebrated not only for his skill on the ice but also for his joyful approach to the game.
“The Columbus Blue Jackets are shocked and devastated by this unimaginable tragedy,” the team said in a statement. “Johnny was not only a great hockey player, but more significantly, a loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to his wife, Meredith, his children, Noa and Johnny, his parents, their family, and friends on the sudden loss of Johnny and Matthew.”
Born in Salem, N.J., Gaudreau’s roots in the community ran deep. He was set to serve as a groomsman in his sister Katie’s wedding to hockey player Devin Joyce in Gloucester City, N.J., just a day after the fatal accident.
Throughout his career, Gaudreau made a significant impact, thrilling fans across the NHL. Last season, he played in 81 games, contributing 48 points. His influence on the sport was profound, but those who knew him remember the indelible impression he left off the ice.
“Johnny played the game with great joy, a joy that was felt by everyone who saw him on the ice,” the Blue Jackets’ statement continued.
“He brought a genuine love for hockey with him everywhere he played, from Boston College to the Calgary Flames to Team USA to the Blue Jackets. The impact he had on our organization and our sport was profound.”
Gaudreau is survived by his wife Meredith and their two young children, Noa, 1, and Johnny, 6 months. His untimely death has left the hockey community and his hometown in mourning.
