Lagos, Nigeria — Adejuwon Soyinka, a journalist and Regional Editor of The Conversation Africa, was arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Sunday.
Soyinka was allegedly taken into custody shortly after arriving from the United Kingdom, according to a distress message alleged to have been sent to The PUNCH by one of his associates.
According to the associate, the journalist had just landed from a Virgin Atlantic flight when the arrest occurred around 5:40 a.m.
The source revealed that no explanation was provided for the arrest, and Soyinka has been held incommunicado since then.
The message read: “Adejuwon Soyinka has been detained by officers of the DSS at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos… No reason has been given for his detention, and Soyinka remains unreachable.”
When reached for comments, DSS spokesperson Peter Afunanya stated that he was unaware of the arrest. “I am not aware of the matter you have raised and have no comments on it,” he said.
As of now, the circumstances surrounding Soyinka’s detention remain unclear.
