Lagos, August 30, 2024 — Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has fulfilled his administration’s promise by compensating victims of the Dosunmu market fire.
The compensation was given after a comprehensive enumeration of those affected by the April 9 fire that ravaged 14 buildings at the popular Lagos Island market.
During the cheque presentation ceremony, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed the government’s commitment to providing relief to the victims, recognizing the devastating impact of the fire on their livelihoods.
“We understand that the damage caused by the fire is immense, but as a responsible and responsive government, we are here to alleviate some of the suffering of those affected,” Sanwo-Olu said. He also urged citizens to avoid actions that could lead to such incidents in the future, noting, “We need to stop careless attitudes that endanger lives and property.”
According to the state’s official enumeration, victims received varying amounts of compensation, including N750,000, N1.5 million, and N2.5 million, based on the extent of the damage they suffered.
Sanwo-Olu said: “This gesture is a testament to our commitment to supporting those affected and rebuilding our communities.
“Our administration remains dedicated to providing immediate relief and long-term support to all Lagosians.
“Together, we will continue to rise above challenges and build a more resilient Lagos.”
The April fire, which broke out at Dosunmu market, formerly known as Docemo market, destroyed several businesses and structures, causing significant losses.
