Rangers Edge Past Enyimba In Preseason Opener

Rangers International F.C., the reigning NPFL champions, secured a narrow victory over their oriental rivals Enyimba in the opening match of the 042 Coal City International Cup preseason tournament.

The decisive moment came in the 51st minute when Agu Kenechukwu scored with a left-footed shot inside the box, following a smart cut-back from Okorie Chiedozie, who received a defense-splitting pass from Isaac Saviour.

The match took place at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, known as ‘The Cathedral,’ which provided a fitting backdrop for the clash between the two most decorated clubs in Nigeria. On a chilly Thursday night, the teams battled for supremacy, with Chiedozie Okorie proving a constant threat to Enyimba’s defense, although he missed a key opportunity in the 6th minute.

Enyimba responded well to Rangers’ early pressure, creating several chances. However, Rangers’ goalkeeper Japhet Opubo was in top form, making crucial saves, including stopping a powerful shot from Joseph Atule in the 12th minute. Enyimba thought they had equalized in the 23rd minute, but Ufere Chinedu’s effort was ruled out for offside.

Rangers’ coach Fidelis Ilechukwu made strategic lineup choices, including debuting former Enyimba defender Macben Otika, who partnered with Charles Okafor in central defense.

The team adopted a 4-3-3 formation, with notable players such as Super Eagles’ Kenneth Igboke and Joel Odoh as wing-backs and Ejike Ugochukwu in a defensive midfield role. Okafor Onyekachi led the attack.

After the match, Coach Ilechukwu praised his team’s performance, stating, “It was a very good game and a difficult test for my boys, but we did well to contain our opponent and scored the only goal of the match, which is very important.

“Enyimba showed great stuff today, but we were very lucky to have won. We continue our rebuilding process leading up to the CAF Champions League, and I commend my boys for standing tall in this preseason encounter.”

Rangers’ next fixture is against Sierra Leone’s F.C. Kallon on Sunday, August 4, 2024, in another night match at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.
