Obi condemns anti-Yoruba remarks, calls tribal bigotry divisive

Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party Presidential candidate, has strongly condemned the anti-Yoruba remarks made by a Canadian-based woman of Igbo origin. Obi described the woman’s comments as an example of tribal bigotry that is both divisive and counterproductive to Nigeria’s development.

In a statement shared via his official X account on Friday, Obi emphasized that such divisive rhetoric has no place in Nigerian society and urged all citizens to reject it.

“I utterly condemn the reported hateful statement and actions attributed to a purported Igbo woman living in Canada against Yoruba or Benin people,” Obi said. “As Nigerians, we should unite and focus on addressing our shared challenges, rather than allowing tribalism and hatred to tear us apart.”

Obi went on to question the purpose of tribal bigotry, stating that it contributes nothing to solving the country’s pressing issues such as poverty, food security, transportation, and governance. He stressed that Nigeria’s progress depends on competent leadership, not on tribal affiliations.

“Our priority should be to move Nigeria forward, regardless of tribe or ethnicity,” Obi added. “We need leaders who have the competence and capability to move the country in the right direction. Tribalism does not put food on the table or ensure good governance.”

He concluded by calling for unity and a focus on building a prosperous and equitable Nigeria, urging Nigerians to reject divisiveness and embrace their shared humanity.
