NBBF invites 16 teams for Zenith Bank Women’s Basketball League

The Nigeria Basketball Federation, NBBF has invited a total of 26 teams for this year’s Zenith Bank sponsored Women’s Basketball League due to tip off in September.

Leading the charge is MFM Basketball Club that will be defending their 2023 Season title and hope to make a return to the continent after they failed in Abuja during the FIBA Africa Zone 2 Women’s Club Champions Qualifiers.

Hot on their heels is is the Nigeria Customs team that shocked everyone at the Zonal Qualifiers and went on to play in the Final Round in Alexandria, Egypt. First Bank Basketball Club, a team with a rich history of success is also there to compete as well as Sunshine Angels Basketball Club that remains a strong contender this season.

Other notable teams include IGP Queens Basketball Club and Delta Force Basketball Club, both of which have shown significant improvement.

Dolphines Basketball Club and Bayelsa Blue Whales Basketball Club are making their presence felt with consistent performances.

Rounding out the competitive lineup is First Deep Waters Basketball Club, a team known for its resilience and strategy.

According to a release signed by NBBF General Secretary Peter Njoku, the competition will hold in two phases with the National 8 Finals slated for Lagos in October.

The invited teams in the Savannah will battle it out at Lafia City Hall in Nasarawa for the first phase from 1-7 September while the 2nd phase comes up at the Indoor Sports Hall of MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja from 22-28 September 2024.

While the first phase  for the Atlantic Conference tips off from 1-7 September inside the Indoor Hall of the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State, to followed by the second phase from 22-28 September at the Indoor Sports Hall in Akure, Ondo State.

The NBBF has further instructed each team to conclude players’ registration not later than five days before tipoff with each side allowed a maximum of two foreign professionals which will attract the sum of N150,000 payment on each player.

The top four teams from each of the Conferences will converge on Lagos from 13-19 October 2024 for the National 8 Finals with the eventual winners getting tickets to represent Nigeria in the FIBA Africa Champions Cup Zone 3 Qualifying Tournament tentatively billed for Liberia in November.
