The National Institute for Sports (NIS) situated in Lagos, Nigeria saw a major highlight during its week-long Sports Week on Tuesday with the grand unveiling of its newly renovated main basketball court PeakNews Online reports.
The overhaul was carried out by Nigerian sports equipment company, Webber Engineering.
The event, attended by NIS staff, students, and friends of the institute, marked a significant moment in the day’s activities. The basketball court, which had been in disrepair for years, now boasts a fresh, modern look.
Webber Engineering’s CEO, Mr. Opeyemi Babalola, addressed the audience, recalling his time at the institute as a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member. He noted that even then, he recognized the court’s poor condition, which had only worsened over time.
“My experience here made me realize the potential impact basketball could have, both as a business and as a way to give back to the community,” Babalola said. “I’m grateful to have contributed to the development of sports facilities not just here, but across 15 African countries.”
He urged others to follow his example and contribute to their communities after their time at the institute.
Prof. Olawale Moronkola, Director General of the NIS, echoed Babalola’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in sports development.
“Sports is a significant industry, and the government cannot do it all alone,” Moronkola stated. “Let’s take this challenge and replicate what Mr. Babalola has done in our own ways. The history of NIS cannot be written without mentioning Webber Hoops and Courts for their contribution to this institute.”
He further encouraged everyone to look around the institution and address other areas in need of improvement, laying a foundation for future enhancements.
