Angry youths in Sabon Birni Gobir Local Government Area of Sokoto State have taken to the streets in protest following the kidnapping and brutal murder of Alhaji Isa Muhammad Bawa, the Sarkin Gobir of Gatawa District.
The traditional leader was abducted and killed by his captors on Wednesday, sparking outrage among the community.
In a video obtained by SaharaReporters on Thursday, protesters in large numbers marched towards the residence of Sokoto State’s Deputy Governor, Alhaji Idris Muhammad Gobir. The youths, visibly angered by the incident, were seen burning tyres and other items as they demanded justice and immediate action from the authorities to address the escalating violence in the region.
A voice in the video narrates, “The youths of Sabon Birni Gobir local government area have taken to the streets to protest the kidnapping and gruesome killing of Alhaji Isa Muhammad Bawa. They are marching to the home of the state’s deputy governor, burning tyres and other valuables.”
The violent demonstration reflects the community’s growing frustration with the increasing insecurity in the region, as they call for justice for their slain leader.
Earlier reports by SaharaReporters revealed that Alhaji Bawa was abducted, tortured, and ultimately killed by his captors. A distressing video had surfaced before his death, showing the traditional leader pleading for his life and urging the government to intervene.
In a tragic turn, Alhaji Bawa’s burial was held without his corpse, in accordance with Islamic guidelines for such circumstances. According to a social media post by a local resident, Sarki Yaqi, the ceremony proceeded despite the absence of the deceased’s body, which remains in the hands of the kidnappers.
“The burial of the Sarkin Gobir has been concluded without his corpse, following Islamic tradition in such cases,” Yaqi posted on Facebook.
The kidnapping and murder of Alhaji Bawa have added to the growing list of violent attacks in Sokoto State, as residents continue to live in fear of escalating insecurity. The protesters are demanding swift action from the government to prevent further tragedies and bring the perpetrators to justice.
