Abuja, Aug. 2, 2024 (NAN) Connected Development (CODE) a Civil Society Organisation (CSO) has urged security agencies to handle the ongoing nationwide protest professionally by not intimidating or oppressing peaceful protesters.
The Founder/Chief Executive Officer, CODE, Hamzat Lawal said this in a statement on Friday day in Abuja.
Lawal also deplored the disorder, looting and destruction carried out by some of the protesters in different parts of the country.
He said his organisation stands in solidarity with the people of Nigeria as they exercise their constitutional right to peaceful protests.
“The ongoing demonstrations across the country are a clear expression of the widespread dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs of the country.
“It is imperative that the government takes urgent and concrete steps to address the issues raised by the citizens.
“This includes but not limited to economic hardship, the lack of accountability and transparency in governance, among others fuelling inequality.
“The voices of the people must not be ignored. The grievances expressed during these protests are legitimate and require immediate attention’’, he said.
According to him, it is not only the duty of the government to listen but also to act decisively in addressing the root causes of these frustrations.
Lawal condemned excessive use of force by some security personnel against the protesters.
The chief executive of CODE said such actions were unacceptable in a democratic society and undermined the principles of justice and freedom that our nation stands for.
He further said that government should ensure that security forces respected the rights of citizens and refrain from any actions that escalate tensions or infringe upon civil liberties.
“At the same time, we denounce the disorder and destruction displayed by some individuals who have taken advantage of the protests to engage in vandalism, looting, and the destruction of public and private properties.
“Such acts not only undermine the legitimate cause of the protests but also harm innocent citizens and our shared infrastructure. Online protesters should also be vigilant against the spread of fake news.
“Verify information before sharing and act responsibly to prevent escalating societal issues. We call on all Nigerians to remain peaceful and refrain from any form of violence or criminal activity.
“Our security agencies must be on alert to avert any breach of our territorial integrity and breakdown of law and order,” he said.
Lawal said CODE remained committed to advocating good governance, transparency, and accountability in Nigeria.
“We urge the government to be deliberate and engage in meaningful dialogue with the people of Nigeria, and take immediate steps to address their demands.
“This is a critical moment for our dear nation, and it is essential that all parties work harmoniously towards a peaceful and just resolution.
“We stand with the people of Nigeria in the quest for a better future for all. Let us all strive to make our voices heard in a manner that upholds the values of democracy, respect for human rights and dignity.” (NAN)
