Gov. Dauda Lawal of Zamfara, on Saturday donated N100 million and 10,000 bags of assorted grains to flood victims in Gummi Local Government Area of the state.
The governor announced the donation when he paid a sympathy visit to Gummi over the recent flood in the area.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the governor had earlier sympathised with the Emir of Gummi, Justice Lawal Hassan over the flood incident.
The governor also visited Gayari community on the outskirts of Gummi town and sympathised with the victims.
Gov. Lawal while addressing some of the flood victims said: “Immediately after this incident happened, I sent a committee headed by our elder, Alhaji Salisu Maibuhu to come and assess the level of damage.
“I later sent my Deputy, Malam Mani Mummuni to also come and sympathise with you.
“Today, I have come to Gummi to also sympathise with the good people of Gummi over what happened as a result of the flood.
“This is worrisome, the way our people were rendered homeless as a result of the flood,” the governor said.
He called on people of Gummi to be patient and consider the disaster as an act from God Almighty.
“I am happy to announce the donation of N100 million, 10,000 bags of rice and maize to the victims,” he said.
The governor also said that the state government would allocate land to the victims to reconstruct new houses.
“My administration will construct new drainages in this area in order to prevent future recurrence of the similar disaster.
“I am appealing to our people to avoid dumping of refuse in the water ways to prevent future recurrence of flood disaster,” the governor said.
Earlier, the Sole Administrator of Gummi Local Government Council, Aminu Nuhu commended the governor for the visit.
The Executive Secretary of State Emergency Management Agency (ZEMA), Amb. Ahmed Bala had recently said that the incident affected 9,784 households in all the 12 political wards in the area.
Bala said 12 persons lost their lives to the flood, while hundreds of hactares of farm lands were washed away. (NAN)
