Less than 24 hours to the close of the summer transfer deadline, Nigeria and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen’s transfer seems to be hanging in the balance PeakNews Online reports.
As it stands, Chelsea’s hopes of signing Osimhen have taken a hit as Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli has reportedly increased their offer for the star striker.
Despite being the biggest spenders in Europe this summer, Chelsea still needs a new striker and has made Osimhen their top target. The reigning African Footballer of the Year award winner has been in exceptional form for Napoli, scoring 15 goals in 25 Serie A appearances last season.
Previously, Osimhen’s release clause, understood to be around £110 million, has deterred potential suitors. However, Napoli has shown a willingness to negotiate, especially after securing Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea for £25 million as a potential replacement.
Osimhen has expressed his desire to leave Napoli this summer, and both Chelsea and Al-Ahli have been vying for his signature ahead of Friday night’s transfer deadline.
While Chelsea was reportedly confident in securing Osimhen, journalist Ben Jacobs has revealed that Al-Ahli has significantly upped their offer. The Saudi club is now offering a four-year contract with a total package worth around €160 million, including a release clause.
Jacobs noted that Al-Ahli’s sporting director, Michael Emenalo, is directly involved in the negotiations and that the club is “cautiously optimistic” about closing the deal. Meanwhile, Chelsea has maintained their position and wage structure, refusing to increase their offer.
Both clubs are pressuring Osimhen to make a decision soon, with Al-Ahli reportedly offering Napoli a fixed fee of €68 million. As the transfer window draws to a close, the race for Osimhen’s signature remains intense.
