- Ten States Battle Widespread Destruction
Abuja, Nigeria – A looming food crisis is threatening Nigeria, as widespread flooding ravages farmlands across ten northern states, agricultural experts warn.
States currently being ravaged by flood including Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Nasarawa, Taraba, Bauchi, Zamfara, Yobe, Sokoto, and Kebbi and PeakNews Online reports that these states are grappling with severe agricultural losses due to heavy rainfall.
An investor in agriculture in Sokoto State, who was identified as Abubakar Ibrahim called on the government to declare a state of emergency in the food sector, saying, “We’re facing a critical situation, the government must act swiftly to prevent widespread hunger.”
Farmers in Bauchi state are particularly concerned about the impact of continuous rainfall on their crops.
Yohanna Gidadoi, a farmer in Ningi, expressed fears of potential flooding and its devastating effects on the harvest.
Jigawa State has already suffered significant losses, with over 2,744 hectares of farmland destroyed and N1 billion worth of produce lost, according to the State Emergency Management Agency.
In Zamfara State, farmers have expressed anxiety as heavy rains threaten their crops after a promising start to the season. The state’s emergency management agency has issued warnings for eight local government areas at high risk of flooding.
The Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency has identified 31 states with a high flood risk and 35 states with a moderate risk, underscoring the severity of the situation.
As the crisis deepens, concerns grow about the potential impact on food prices and availability across the country.
