Vice President Kamala Harris has selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate for the 2024 presidential election, following her replacement of President Biden as the Democratic Party’s candidate, sources say.
Harris is expected to officially announce her choice at a campaign event in Philadelphia on Tuesday evening, according to CNN. Members of Harris’ team have traveled to the Minnesota governor’s mansion to congratulate Walz and accompany him to Philadelphia for the rally.
Sources report that Harris grew increasingly confident in Walz during the final days of the vetting process, particularly impressed by his positive demeanor. Walz brings a diverse background, having served 24 years in the Army National Guard and a decade in the U.S. House of Representatives before being elected governor in 2018.
The announcement has sparked criticism from conservative figures, who argue that the selection represents a shift to the far left. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described it as “the most left-wing ticket in American history” and criticized Walz for his handling of the 2020 protests in Minnesota following the killing of George Floyd.
“Walz sat by and let Minneapolis burn,” DeSantis claimed, referencing criticism that Walz faced from both sides during the protests.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey had previously criticized Walz for being too slow to deploy the National Guard to address the riots, which resulted in $500 million in property damage and looting.
