Butler, Pennsylvania — Former United States President Donald Trump, 78, was shot during a campaign rally on Saturday in what the FBI described as an assassination attempt. The incident occurred as Trump began his speech in Butler, Pennsylvania, about 30 miles north of Pittsburgh.
Shots rang out, hitting Trump in the right ear and causing his face to bleed. The suspect, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, was identified as a registered Republican who previously donated to a left-leaning political action committee.
Secret Service agents neutralized the suspect after he fired from a rooftop about 150 yards from the stage. An AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle was recovered near his body. One rally attendee was killed, and two others were critically injured.
World leaders have expressed their condemnation of the attack and sent their well wishes to Trump and the victims:

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz: “The attack … is despicable. I wish him a speedy recovery. My thoughts are also with the people who were affected by the attack. Such acts of violence threaten democracy.”
