Former President Donald Trump now holds a five-point lead over President Joe Biden, according to a recent CBS poll.
The poll, released on Thursday, shows Trump leading nationally among likely voters, 52% to 47%. This marks an increase from a July 3 poll, where Trump held a two-point lead (50% to 48%).A Republican president has not won the popular vote in two decades, and it has been three decades since one won by more than five percent.Trump also leads in key battleground states, beating Biden 51% to 48%. This represents a one-point increase since the last CBS battleground survey conducted a week ago. The states included in this survey are Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. The poll also explored the impact of the assassination attempt on voters’ likelihood to support Trump. On Saturday, Trump was shot by a gunman at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The survey indicated that 26% of registered voters were more willing to vote for Trump following the incident. The majority of voters (67%) said the attempt did not change their minds, while 7% said it made them less likely to consider voting for him.Trump’s response to the shooting also influenced voter perception. After being tackled by Secret Service agents, Trump stood up and pumped his fist in the air, later calling for “unity” in the country. According to the poll, 54% of respondents believe Trump has encouraged “more unity” since the incident, while 46% think he has encouraged “more division.”Additionally, 75% of voters believe the Secret Service could have done more to protect Trump from the shooter, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, who fired into the crowd from an unguarded nearby roof.
