Stuttgart, July 5, 2024 — Spain remains on track for a fourth European Championship title as Mikel Merino’s extra-time goal propelled them into the semi-finals, eliminating hosts Germany in a thrilling encounter at Stuttgart Arena.
The highly anticipated match, featuring a resurgent Germany against the best-performing side of Euro 2024, lived up to its billing. The game was marked by aggression, tension, and drama, keeping spectators on edge from start to finish.
Spain took the lead six minutes into the second half when substitute Dani Olmo side-footed home a cross from 16-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal, who notched his third assist of the tournament. Olmo’s goal injected life into a match that had been cautiously played until that point.
Germany nearly equalized when substitute Niclas Fullkrug hit the post, but they finally drew level in the final minute of normal time. Florian Wirtz sent a thunderous strike in off the post, igniting celebrations among the home fans.
Both sides had chances to win in extra time. Mikel Oyarzabal and Wirtz saw their efforts narrowly miss the target, while Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon made a superb save to deny a Fullkrug header, setting the stage for a potential penalty shootout.
However, in the dying seconds of extra time, Merino’s powerful header sealed the victory for Spain, who will now face either France or Portugal in the semi-finals.
Despite Dani Carvajal receiving a second yellow card and being sent off just before the final whistle, Spain’s players and fans celebrated with joy and relief as they advanced in the tournament.
