The South East Governors’ Forum (SEGF) convened in Enugu yesterday and reaffirmed their commitment to advocating for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
This decision follows a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja, which dismissed a N1 billion fundamental human rights lawsuit filed by Kanu against the federal government.
The governors emphasized their intention to seek a political solution for Kanu’s release by meeting with President Bola Tinubu in the near future. The announcement was made by Chief Hope Uzodimma, the Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Imo State, during the reading of a communique at the conclusion of their meeting on Tuesday evening.
The meeting was attended by prominent figures including Abia State Governor Alex Otti, Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo, and the host, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah.
The communique from the meeting stated: “The Forum commiserates with the Government and people of Abia State, Ebonyi State, Imo State, South East, Nigeria, and Chief Ogbonnaya Onu’s family on the demise of His Excellency, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu.”
The Forum also welcomed a delegation led by former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, and His Royal Majesty Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, Obi of Onitsha, who paid a solidarity visit.
Furthermore, the governors reviewed and deliberated on the report from the South East security and economic summit held in Owerri on September 28, 2023. They agreed to implement key aspects of the report concerning security and economic integration and affirmed their commitment to actionable plans on these issues.
The Forum resolved to visit President Tinubu to discuss pressing matters affecting the South East region and reiterated their intention to engage with the federal government to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu.
