The Pentagon revealed a new $1.7 billion military assistance package for Ukraine on Monday, aimed at bolstering its defense against Russia’s ongoing invasion.
This substantial aid includes missiles, ammunition, and anti-tank weapons.
The package comprises $200 million in immediate assistance from the Department of Defense’s existing stockpiles and a $1.5 billion long-term commitment from the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) funds.
Among the military equipment being sent to Ukraine are surface-to-air missiles, short- and medium-range air defense munitions, RIM-7 missiles for air defense, electronic warfare equipment, High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) rockets, artillery and mortar rounds, Tube-Launched, Optically-Tracked, Wire-Guided (TOW) missiles, and Javelin and AT-4 anti-tank weapons.
This latest aid package is the 62nd drawdown of military equipment for Ukraine authorized by President Biden and the 20th distribution under USAI, as stated by the Pentagon.
In a statement, Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the urgency and importance of this support. “The United States is sending Ukraine a significant new package of urgently needed weapons and equipment to support its military forces as they defend against Russia’s assault,” Blinken said. “This support will help strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses and reinforce Ukraine’s capabilities across the front lines.”
Blinken highlighted that this security assistance package is the ninth since Congress approved $60 billion in additional funding for Ukraine in April. “We will deploy this new assistance as quickly as possible to bolster Ukraine’s defense of its territory and its people,” he added.
