Nigerian Navy hands over 85 bags of impounded Cannabis Sativa to NDLEA

LAGOS, Nigeria – July 30, 2024 – The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT has handed over 85 bags of cannabis sativa siezed from dealers  to the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Marine Command.

The intercepted consignments, each weighing 40 kilograms,  were transferred during a formal handover by the Commander NNS BEECROFT,  Commodore Rafiu Taye Oladejo, who was represented by the Executive Officer of the ashore establishment,  Navy Captain Mutalib Raji.

A statement from the Base Information Officer Lieutenant Hussaini Ibrahim quoted Captain Raji disclosing that the cannabis sativa was seized on July 14, 2024, by the NNS BEECROFT Quick Response Team and Deep Blue Assets of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA). Acting on credible intelligence, the team intercepted criminal elements offloading cannabis from a large wooden boat near Moba Beach in the Badagry area of Lagos State. The criminals fled upon sighting the team, abandoning 60 bags of cannabis. An additional 25 bags were discovered during a further search, totaling 85 bags and weighing over 3,327 kilograms.

The operation was part of the strategic directive from Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, to maintain a strong presence along Lagos waterways and adjoining creeks, aiming to eliminate maritime crime and criminality. Captain Raji warned those involved in illicit drug activities to cease their actions, emphasizing that NNS BEECROFT would relentlessly pursue all criminal elements within its jurisdiction.

This significant seizure highlights the unwavering commitment of NNS BEECROFT to combating the spread and use of illicit drugs, particularly among the youth, which poses a threat to their health and national security.
