Nigerian athletes set to represent the country at the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympic Games have been advised to thoroughly understand the rules of their respective sports to ensure podium finishes. This call was made during a seminar focused on Olympic preparation.
Prof. Clement Fasan from Lagos State University, the lead speaker at the event, discussed “Olympic Spirit and Global Peace.” He praised the organizers, emphasizing that the seminar, held in an Olympic month, is crucial for preparing athletes for the upcoming challenges. Prof. Fasan highlighted the importance of remembering that the Olympics are not solely about winning but also about fostering global peace. He stressed the need for athletes to perform at their best and avoid actions that could tarnish their image or that of Nigeria.
Prof. Fasan also urged athletes to be mindful of their nutrition, training schedules, and the ever-evolving rules of their sports. He commended the management of the National Institute for Sports (NIS) and Newstap Communication for organizing the seminar, believing it would help athletes understand what to expect in Paris.
In a joint paper titled “Last Minute Essentials for Team Nigeria Podium Success in Paris 2024,” NIS Director General Prof. Olawale Moronkola and Dr. Joy Mayaki, a lecturer at the institute, reminded athletes that now is not the time for intensive training or learning new skills. They emphasized the importance of maintaining weight conditions, discussing strategies and tactics, and avoiding distractions such as unnecessary phone use before events. Dr. Mayaki also stressed the need for athletes to stay drug-free, be cautious with supplements, maintain proper nutrition, uphold team spirit, and manage stress.
The seminar also featured contributions from the Lagos Liaison Officer of the Sports Ministry, Nkana Mbora, and the President General of Nigeria Football Supporters Club, Dr. Rafiu Ladipo. Both praised the seminar’s organizers and urged athletes to apply the knowledge gained.
In his welcome address, Prof. Moronkola stated that the NIS would continue to develop programs to advance sports in Nigeria. He expressed satisfaction with the collaboration between the institute and Newstap Communications.
Paralympian Louise Ejike, speaking on behalf of the athletes, expressed gratitude to the organizers, noting that they had learned a lot from the seminar.
Mr. George Aluo, Founder and Publisher of Newstap Communications, represented by Editor Ifeanyi Eduzor, highlighted the company’s commitment to ensuring Nigerian athletes are well-prepared for the Olympics. He praised the NIS for its partnership and emphasized Newstap Communications’ dedication to accurate reporting and initiatives that promote sports in Nigeria.
The seminar, held in the NIS Conference Room, attracted numerous sports professionals, administrators, and media representatives.
