Bordeaux, France – The Nigerian women’s football team, quarter-finalists in the 2004 Olympics, is set to arrive in Bordeaux on Thursday night. This marks their first appearance at the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament in 16 years.
The team, nine-time African champions, will face a challenging group stage that includes Brazil, Spain, and Japan. They are scheduled to depart Spain on an Air France flight, with an expected arrival in Bordeaux just before 11 PM. The delegation, comprising 18 players, four alternate players, and officials, will head to Hotel Mercure, arriving shortly before midnight.
The Super Falcons last competed in the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament in Beijing in 2008, where they faced defeats against Korea DPR (0-1), Germany (0-1), and Brazil (1-3), who went on to win the silver medal.
Women’s football was introduced as a demonstration sport at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. The Super Falcons debuted at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, where they faced losses to China (1-3), Norway (1-3), and the USA (1-3), the latter two being eventual medalists.
