Osogbo, Nigeria – Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has underscored the critical responsibility of current football governors to safeguard and sustain the sport through key developmental initiatives.
During a visit to Osun State this past weekend, Gusau emphasized that football should be inclusive, benefiting all demographics—men, women, young, and old.
Expressing his satisfaction with the Osun State Football Association’s efforts, led by Mr. Sola Fanawopo, Gusau praised the introduction of the upcoming Women’s League and the Corporate Football League, which aim to enhance the recreational aspect of football. “Football belongs to everyone: players, coaches, referees, supporters, volunteers, and communities,” Gusau remarked. He lauded the community-based Igbajo United FC for qualifying to play in the Nigeria National League, highlighting the success of community-owned clubs.
Gusau stressed the importance of grassroots football as the foundation of Nigeria’s football vision. He commended Osun State’s achievements, citing the participation of 32 grassroots clubs in the SmartCity Osun State Football League and the affiliation of over 400 grassroots clubs with the Osun State FA. Additionally, Osun State boasts over 400 grassroots coaches, 13 referee societies, and 15 independent grassroots leagues. “This model is commendable and should be replicated across other states,” Gusau recommended.
Acknowledging the pivotal role of government, Gusau appealed to the Osun State Government to support the Football Association by building more stadiums and modern training facilities, and providing financial grants to privately-owned and community-owned clubs.
The Gusau administration has been proactive in enhancing Nigerian football, focusing on infrastructure and developmental programs. Initiatives include constructing a 3-Star accommodation facility for national teams through the FIFA Forward 3.0 project and providing top-notch training facilities.
Recently, 40 upcoming referees participated in a five-day FIFA training program aimed at nurturing talent to elevate Nigerian refereeing standards internationally. Starting this Monday, a three-module CAF C Coaching Course, exclusively for women, will take place at the NFF/FIFA Technical Centre in Abuja, involving 30 women coaches.
Accompanying Gusau on the tour were key NFF officials, including Otunba Sunday Dele-Ajayi (Ondo State FA), Alhaji Ganiyu Majekodunmi (Ogun State FA), Kabiyesi James Odeniran (Oyo State FA), Mr. Oluwole Oloworemo (Ekiti State FA), and the host, Mr. Sola Fanawopo (Osun State FA).
