Naval Chief Advocates for AI in Tackling Modern Security Challenges

Abuja, Nigeria – Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, Chief of Naval Staff of the Nigerian Navy, has urged the military to address the complexity of contemporary security challenges through the extensive use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Speaking at the 2nd Quarter 2024 Defence Transformation Seminar, held at the Naval Headquarters in Abuja, Vice Admiral Ogalla emphasized the transformative potential of AI in military operations.

The seminar, themed “Harnessing Artificial Intelligence as a Transformative Tool for Contemporary Military Operations,” brought together key military and defense stakeholders. Vice Admiral Ogalla highlighted the dual need to exploit AI’s benefits while safeguarding information and materials on the internet.

Guest speakers, Rear Admiral IB Yusuf (rtd) and Col OK Ogbole (rtd), echoed this sentiment, calling for greater commitment from the Armed Forces to integrate AI into military operations. They stressed the importance of creating an enabling environment through comprehensive training of personnel and detailed the numerous advantages of AI over traditional operational methods.

Several dignitaries from various defense agencies attended the event, underscoring the significant role AI is poised to play in enhancing military capabilities and addressing contemporary security issues.

Military experts note that AI has rapidly evolved from a speculative concept to a pivotal force reshaping various sectors, including military operations. At the strategic level, AI is revolutionizing decision-making processes by enabling military strategists to analyze vast amounts of data, identify patterns, and predict adversarial actions. This predictive analysis facilitates more informed decisions, allowing for preemptive measures and strategic planning that are crucial in modern warfare.

For instance, AI can process intelligence data from satellites, drones, and other reconnaissance assets, providing a comprehensive overview of potential threats and enabling timely responses. The integration of AI into military operations is thus seen as essential for maintaining strategic superiority and effectively responding to evolving security challenges.
