MTN subscribers protest in Ibadan, Osogbo, Uyo, Calabar over barred phone lines

A crowd of MTN subscribers whose phone lines were barred by the network operator have stormed the firm’s office in Ibadan, Oyo State, Osogbo, Osun state, Akwa Ibom and Calabar in Cross River State on Monday morning protesting the barring of the their lines.

In Ibadan some of subscribers went wild, throwing stones at the building where the MTN office is located.

MTN, Nigeria’s largest mobile network, had barred several users’ lines on Sunday, allegedly due to their failure to link their National Identification Numbers (NIN) with their phone numbers. Some affected individuals claimed that the action was intended to disrupt a planned nationwide anti-government protest scheduled for Thursday.

As of now, MTN has not issued an official statement, and the extent of the impact on mobile numbers remains unclear.
