More floods are coming, FG warns

Abuja, July 4, 2024 – The Federal Government has alerted states and local governments to prepare for heightened river flooding as the country reaches the peak of the rainy season.

This warning was issued by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, during a news conference held on Thursday.

Prof. Utsev emphasized the importance of taking precautionary measures to prevent potential disasters. The states have been notified following recent findings from the 2024 Annual Flood Outlook, unveiled by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency. State governors received detailed forecasts and specific preventative measures tailored to their regions.

The minister highlighted significant flood risks identified in 148 local government areas across 31 states, including Adamawa, Akwa-Ibom, and Anambra. The outlook, which presents three scenarios, predicts increased flood risks from April to November, with the most severe flooding anticipated between July and September.

“Over ten states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have already experienced varying levels of flooding since April, resulting in casualties and property damage,” Utsev stated. “Notable incidents include the flooding in Trademore Estate, FCT, which led to two deaths and significant property loss.”

Prof. Utsev urged states and local governments to intensify flood prevention efforts, such as clearing blocked drainage systems, relocating residents from flood-prone areas, and constructing flood barriers. He warned of expected river flooding from major rivers like the Niger and Benue, stressing the need for continuous monitoring and proactive measures.

The minister also noted that increased rainfall could worsen the ongoing cholera outbreak, which has resulted in 63 deaths and 2,102 suspected cases. A presidential committee has been established to address cholera and other waterborne diseases linked to flooding.

Additionally, a realigned 2023 flood report has led to the formation of a new committee, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, to tackle broader disaster management issues, including erosion and desertification.
