Düsseldorf, Germany – A dramatic late own goal by Jan Vertonghen propelled France into the quarter-finals of Euro 2024, ending Belgium’s campaign in a tightly contested match at Düsseldorf Arena.
The match, which had been largely devoid of excitement and quality for extended periods, seemed headed for extra time. However, with just five minutes remaining, a shot by French substitute Randal Kolo Muani deflected off Vertonghen, securing the decisive goal for France.
Throughout the game, France had squandered several scoring opportunities, with their lack of finishing prowess evident once again. Even their captain, Kylian Mbappe, uncharacteristically missed chances he would typically convert.
Belgium, despite their struggles, had a chance to take the lead before France’s late winner. Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne made a powerful run through the middle, only to see his shot expertly saved by French goalkeeper Mike Maignan.
That attempt was the only significant opportunity for a below-par Belgian side. France managed to hold on during the closing minutes to seal their progression to the last eight. They will now await their next challenge, facing either Portugal or Slovenia in the quarter-finals.
