Enugu, Nigeria – Gunmen have abducted at least 11 passengers at the Amechi-Idodo axis of the Enugu-Abakaliki federal highway. Among the abductees are returning students from tertiary institutions in Ebonyi State.
The incident occurred on Tuesday as the victims were traveling in a commercial bus from Awka, Anambra State, to Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital. The bus was intercepted by the gunmen at the notorious Amechi-Idodo area in Nkanu East Local Government Area, which has recently become a hotspot for kidnappers.
While it remains unconfirmed whether the Enugu State Police Command is aware of the incident, a family member of one of the victims reported that the kidnappers have established contact and are demanding a ransom of N3 million.
Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police Joshua Ukandu, disclosed that the Enugu State Police Command is working diligently to address the kidnapping issue. He mentioned that Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police, Augustina Ogbodo, has reached out to her Enugu counterpart, Kanayo Uzuegbu, to collaborate on tackling the increasing cases of kidnapping in the area.
Enugu Governor Peter Mbah recently ordered security agencies to flush out the hoodlums from the region.
