Heywood, UK – A young football fan tragically lost his life in a car crash after celebrating England’s victory in the Euros, his heartbroken mother has revealed.
Will Place, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene after his car collided with a pub in Heywood and erupted into flames in the early hours of Monday morning (July 1). Will, a recent graduate in sports journalism, had spent the evening celebrating England’s win against Slovakia.
The fatal crash occurred at around 3:15 am when Will’s Dacia Sandero smashed into the White Lion pub on York Street in Heywood. The incident happened shortly after police officers in a patrol car attempted to stop the vehicle on nearby Bolton Road.
The collision sparked a massive blaze, prompting fire crews to rush to the scene. Despite their efforts, Will could not be saved.
His mother, Beverley Place, a councillor in Heywood and a former mayor of Rochdale, has since issued a poignant tribute to her son. She expressed her devastation, acknowledging that he made “the worst decision of his life” and “paid the ultimate price” after celebrating England’s victory on Sunday (June 30).
“This is a heartbreaking loss,” Beverley said. “Will was a bright young man with a promising future in sports journalism. Our family is devastated by this tragedy.”
The community of Heywood is in mourning, with many expressing their condolences and support for the Place family during this difficult time.
