First Lady of Nigeria Urges Women to Lead Food Security Campaign

Abuja, Nigeria – First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, has called on women to spearhead the nation’s Food Security Campaign.

She made this appeal at the State House Residence while unveiling her vegetable garden, part of her efforts to inspire first-time women farmers to participate in the ongoing “Every Home A Garden” competition.

The competition, which is open to first-time women farmers across Nigeria, invites participants to submit a 30-second video showcasing their gardens along with their details to the Office of the Wives of the State Government by September 25, 2024. The winner will receive a grand prize of N25 million.

In a statement released by her media aide, Busola Kukoyi, the First Lady highlighted her personal commitment to the cause by planting seven varieties of vegetables, including spinach, waterleaf, bitter leaf, ewedu, lemongrass, scent leaf, and okra. She emphasized that individual efforts could significantly mitigate food insufficiency in the country.

“This little garden will be able to provide healthy vegetables enough for my household, and I would definitely be able to let some of my staff have as well. The solution to any problem lies in everyone contributing their own quota to getting that solution. As a leader, I must show example and plant my own garden,” said Oluremi Tinubu.

She encouraged women across Nigeria to join the competition by planting their own gardens, ensuring enough produce to feed themselves and their neighbors. This initiative, she noted, would promote communal living and support the Federal Government’s food security campaign.

“The vegetables are medicinal, and the garden is to lead by example for other women to embrace smart gardening,” she added.

The First Lady showcased her garden to Chioma Uzodinma, the Wife of the Imo State Governor, and Aisha Matawale, the Wife of the Minister of State for Defence, underscoring the importance of women’s involvement in enhancing food security through home gardening.
