Abuja, July 9, 2024 – The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command has arrested Shuaibu Alhaji Yushau, who climbed a high mast at ASO Radio in Katampe district, brandishing a placard to protest the harsh economic situation in the country.
Yushau was apprehended after police operatives employed professional persuasion techniques to coax him down from the mast. The suspect, who left a suicide note at the foot of the mast early Monday morning, expressed his willingness to sacrifice his life to highlight the problems facing Nigerians.
The note listed several demands, including the return of the fuel subsidy and measures to alleviate the economic burdens on Nigerians. Yushau called for fellow Nigerians to join him in his protest, demanding the following:
The government should reinstate the fuel subsidy.
The government should declare a state of emergency in Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Kaduna, Niger, and Borno states to address insecurity and take immediate action to eliminate terrorism.
The government should open borders for food importation to eradicate food shortages.
The government should address the rapidly increasing problem of out-of-school children.
The FCT police public relations officer, Josephine Adeh, confirmed that Yushau is in custody and in stable condition.
“Following a distress call from concerned citizens about a young man who climbed a very high mast with a placard at ASO Radio in Katampe at about 09:10 a.m., operatives of the FCT Police Command swiftly mobilized to the location. With much professional persuasion from the police operatives, the man, later identified as Shuaibu Alhaji Yushau, was prevented from taking his own life. He claimed to have been observing the mast for about a week before deciding to climb it. The suspect is presently in police custody and in a stable condition. Further developments will be communicated in due course,” Adeh’s statement read.
