
LAGOS – Renowned singer, actress, and journalist Onyeka Onwenu passed away on Tuesday evening in Lagos at the age of 72.
Ms. Onwenu, known as the “Elegant Stallion” by the Nigerian press, reportedly collapsed and died after performing at the 80th birthday celebration of her friend, Chief Stella Okoli, founder of Emzor Pharmaceuticals. She was rushed to Reddington Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Born on January 31, 1952, Ms. Onwenu had a distinguished career as a songwriter and social activist. In 2013, she was appointed Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development by the Goodluck Jonathan administration.
Her death marks the loss of a significant figure in Nigerian entertainment and social advocacy.
