Washington, D.C. (Sunday) – President Joe Biden expressed his relief and gratitude on Sunday for the safety of former President Donald Trump following an assassination attempt on Saturday night. Emphasizing the importance of national unity, Biden conveyed his satisfaction that Trump is “doing well.”
In a statement from the White House, Biden revealed he had instructed the Secret Service to extend every protective measure to Trump and to bolster security at the Republican National Convention in response to the incident.
“I’ve directed an independent review of national security at yesterday’s rally to assess exactly what happened, and we’ll share the results of that independent review with the American people,” Biden announced.
The president also extended his deepest condolences to the family of the victim who was killed during the attack. “He was a father, who was protecting his family from the bullets that were being fired,” Biden said.
Biden highlighted the importance of unity during this challenging time and announced plans to address the nation from the Oval Office later tonight.
Following the incident, the White House confirmed that President Biden has rescheduled his planned Monday trip to Texas.
The assassination attempt occurred at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where Trump was shot in the upper ear by a gunman identified as 20-year-old Thomas Cook. Trump narrowly avoided a fatal shot to the head by moving at the last moment and ducking after being hit. An audience member tragically lost his life in the shooting.
In response to the attempt on Trump’s life, President Biden altered his weekend plans, returning to the White House from his home in Rehoboth, Delaware, after addressing the situation at a local police station.
“Look, there’s no place in America for this kind of violence. It’s sick. It’s sick. It’s one of the reasons why we have to unite this country. We cannot allow for this to be happening. We cannot be like this. We cannot condone this,” Biden declared in his Saturday night speech.
