In a spectacular display of talent, five-year-old Jothan Japhet captivated the audience by winning the Open Water swimming event for kids at the inaugural BAO Boat Race.
Japhet finished ahead of Chiamaka Orji, who secured second place in the short-distance race.
The event, held at the waterfront of the Navy Sailing Club in Navy Town, Ojo, Lagos, saw Moses Orugbami and Nwankwo Raymond crowned overall winners. They outperformed competitors Orji Monday and Orji Chididu, who took second place, while Sampson S. Chima and Aliyu Yakubu finished third in the highlight GP14 race.
In the Laser category, Abdulsalam Jamilu claimed first place, followed by Amaefulam Dozie and Sub Lt. Anum Precious, who took second and third respectively. In the boys’ Kayak event, Alaba Joseph triumphed over Jason Japhet and Kazeem Ibrahim. Pataka Esther led the Women’s Kayak event, surpassing Deborah Ogouoko and Odoh Sandra.
Aliyu Yakubu showcased his skills in the Men’s Kayak event, finishing ahead of Amaefulam Dozie and Orji. Additionally, Alaba Joseph, Jason Japhet, and Amaefuleh Blessed topped the open water swimming for boys aged 10-16 years, while Benedicta Japhet led Nwankwo Jessica and Nwankwo Jacinta in the girls’ category.
Sponsors Commodore Mutairu Braimah, Captain Festus Adewuyi, and Engr. Francis Olo expressed their commitment to sustaining the sailing culture of the club. They urged other members to support future races to keep sailors active. Commodore Braimah, who also serves as the Commander of NNS Wey, emphasized the importance of club members demonstrating their capability to host races.
Captain Festus Adewuyi, Chairman of the interim management committee of the Navy Sailing Club, announced that the BAO Boat Race will become an annual event.
